My heart goes out to the thousands who are losing their federal civil service jobs. Trump and his loyalists say they are getting rid of the “deep state.” To do that they are firing thousands of civil service workers for doing their jobs. We will soon find out the administration is not getting rid of the “deep state.” They are getting rid of the “competent state,” nonpartisan people who were hired for their knowledge and expertise in their fields.
Their replacements will be Trump loyalists, hired not for their competence or experience, but for their promise to do whatever is asked of them by the administration. Once that happens, we will begin to see a slow and steady erosion of services that typically keep the country running without our noticing, like setting standards and checking the safety of our meats and vegetables, making sure aircraft meet safety standards and air traffic controllers know their stuff, ensuring that our water meets basic health standards and our interstate highways and bridges meet construction standards. The list goes on and on and touches every part of our lives. The “deep state” has quietly kept us alive and healthy and has protected us from foreign and domestic adversaries. The loyalist state will have no such concerns. Too bad for the rest of us.
Get ready for the dominoes to begin falling.
